We all grew up with fairy tales such as Jack in the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood. Have you ever wondered what would happen if all these stories got mixed up together? That is exactly what happens in Steven Sondheim’s musical, Into the Woods.

As the curtain rises we are introduced to a baker and his wife who long to have a child. A wicked witch has cursed them with the inability to have children but is willing to lift the curse if they would venture into the woods and bring back certain items - “a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, some hair as yellow as corn and a shoe as pure as gold.” Enter Jack, whose best friend is a white cow that will not give milk. Jack’s mother sends him off through the forest to sell the useless animal which he trades for 5 magic beans. We are also introduced to a little girl who is about to enter the forest to take some goodies to her grandmother’s house. She stops by the home of the baker and his wife to purchase some goodies to take along with her and she wears - you guessed it – “a cape as red as blood.” Cinderella longs to attend the king’s festival as her wicked stepmother and stepsisters are preparing to go. She is given her wish and is magically dressed in a beautiful ball gown and shoes “as pure as gold!” Deep in the woods we also meet Rapunzel with her long- long “hair as yellow as corn,” who lives in a tower, two Prince Charmings (one who falls in love with Cinderella and the other, Rapunzel). We will eventually also meet a big bad wolf, Little Red’s grandmother, a mysterious stranger and various other fairytale characters. Their stories all become intertwined through act one, which ends “happily ever after.”

Then we find out that “happily ever after” is not all it is cracked up to be. The second act begins where all these fairytales left off. Cinderella is bored with her new life; Jack has sold his best friend, climbed a magic beanstalk and angered a giant; the baker’s new child cries all the time; and even Rapunzel misses her life in the tower! These are the least of the troubles we encounter in the exciting second act!

Into the Woods stars operetta veteran actors, James Willis with dual roles as “The Big Bad Wolf” and “Cinderella’s Prince,” Megan Wright as “Cinderella,” Danny Hall as “the baker,” and Rachel Chumley as “the witch.” Newcomers include Abby Berry as “the baker’s wife,” Joey Hall as “Jack,” and Stephanie Dunbar as “Rapunzel,” along with many other talented Sequim High School students. You have got to come see this year’s operetta to find out how it all turns out. The music is beautiful, even haunting. The fairytale characters are unlike any you have ever experienced. Robin Hall is our prize-winning choreographer and music director who has collaborated with stage director, Christy Rutherford on the last sixteen Sequim High School operettas, having brought you last year’s wildly successful Disney musical, “Beauty and the Beast.”
